Frequently Asked Questions
1. Q:  What is the AMAA Certified Merger & Acquisition Advisor (CM&AA) Program?
A:  In support of our member’s M&A focus, the AMAA has developed the high-level Certified Merger & Acquisition Advisor (CM&AA) training and credentialing program to help our members better serve the needs of their existing and potential clients. The CM&AA is an advanced credential evidencing the highest recognized standards of professional excellence for middle market corporate financial advisory and transaction services. The certification program provides the first ‘gold standard’ to help business clients select a financial advisor of the highest caliber. The program builds on all of your existing skills, while recognizing new leadership and professional competencies needed in the marketplace today. Moreover, the AMAA has established extremely high professional and ethical requirements insuring the ongoing integrity of the CM&AA designation.
2. Q:  How does the CM&AA training and certification program work?
A:  The four-day CM&AA certification program, preceded by a self-study program, is substantive and complete. It builds on your existing skills to provide you with the necessary framework and network to further advance your professional and financial goals, as well as those of the clients you serve. After acceptance into the program, you will need to complete 18 hours of self-study and testing on our Guide to Mergers & Acquisitions manual. You will then attend one of our four-day instructor-led trainings and complete 24 hours of core courses, followed by a 4-hour examination.
3. Q:  Why was the Certified Merger & Acquisition Advisor (CM&AA) Program developed?
A:  Considering the large and highly fragmented middle market today, business owners are often left to their own devices when making important decisions about strategic alternatives without the benefit of a competent corporate financial advisor. For many reasons, ranging from boredom to retirement, millions of owners require the services of a trusted and knowledgeable professional when facing questions about the purchase, growth or sale of a privately held business.

The AMAA and its members sought to fill the void in the middle market by developing a source of trusted advisors for the business owner. The CM&AA credential was designed and launched by a consortium of successful CPA and corporate financial advisory firms recognizing that private business owners needed a much better frame of reference for making important decisions when facing critical business challenges. CM&AA training program is innovative, rigorous and challenging so the special needs of the business client can be met.
4. Q:  Why should I earn my CM&AA credential?
A:  Some goals of CM&AA certification are:
  • To maintain the highest recognized standards of professional excellence for corporate advisory and transaction services.
  • To provide a benchmark for professional achievement within that overall body of knowledge.
  • To provide prospective clients with an easy way to select a truly knowlegeable and competent M&A advisor.
The CM&AA designation provides an essential foundation for maintaining the highest professional standards. The CM&AA designation attests to the holder’s mastery of this body of knowledge and commitment to staying abreast of new developments in the field.

CM&AA certification is also important because it recognizes an individual’s professional achievement and competence, serves as a tool to both attract and better serve clients, provides identification with other professionals in the field, and stimulates career advancement. The CM&AA designation may be prominently displayed on business cards, letterheads and other promotional items.
